Blows and 'bare' tactics block planned eviction<\/p>\n
TANGERANG (JP): The planned eviction of more than 2,000
\nresidents of Gaga Indah subdistrict in Ciledug here yesterday was
\npostponed after a duel between angry residents and the driver of
\nthe bulldozer used to demolish their houses.<\/p>\n
Hundreds of residents had guarded their homes and blocked the
\nentrance road with large rocks and coconut tree trunks since
\ndawn, demanding that the clearance of their 11,000 square-meter
\nplot be delayed.<\/p>\n
The clearance team, backed up by dozens of police and military
\npersonnel arrived later in the morning. The bulldozer was parked
\nnot far from the site.<\/p>\n
The residents became angry when the bulldozer's driver was
\nordered to start the engine at about noon. Several were so
\nemotional that they clambered into the bulldozer and hit the
\ndriver.<\/p>\n
They even tried to confiscate the machinery and damage it
\nbefore being driven away by the public order officers.<\/p>\n
In support of their male residents' struggle, two housewives
\nstriped off down to their underwear.<\/p>\n
Other panicked people took their valuables away out of fear
\nthat the demolition would proceed.<\/p>\n
However, because of the vociferous opposition from the local
\nresidents, Amsori, the leader of the clearance team eventually
\nordered the driver to withdraw the bulldozer from the area.<\/p>\n
He did not say when the team would return to proceed with the
\nland clearance.<\/p>\n
Andi Suwandi, one of the residents, said the demolition plan
\nwas sparked by a dispute between the H. Muhammad Pean and Ilyas
\nfamilies over land inheritance from their ancestors.<\/p>\n
Andi said the residents bought their land from Muhammad in
\n1982 at Rp 15,000 (US$1.90) per square meter.<\/p>\n
Ilyas and his relatives, however, were not satisfied even
\nthough they had been given money from the land sales.<\/p>\n
\"Ilyas then filed a lawsuit at the court and won the case,\"
