        "content": "<p>Blindness haunts million of toddlers<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: A recent survey shows that a lack of vitamin A may<br>\nresult in five million Indonesian under-fives suffering from<br>\nvisual defects or blindness, says an expert.<\/p>\n<p>Amy Rice of Helen Keller International said here on Tuesday<br>\nthat the survey was conducted based on the eating behavior of the<br>\ntoddlers.<\/p>\n<p>She said a toddler should consume at least 350 RE (retinol<br>\nequivalent) of vitamin A each day to meet his daily needs.<\/p>\n<p>Blindness caused by retinol deficiency would not be able to be<br>\ncorrected, she said. The survey showed there was no difference<br>\nbetween children with vitamin A deficiency who lived in rural<br>\nareas and those who lived in urban areas.<\/p>\n<p>The deficiency could be avoided by consuming more food<br>\ncontaining vitamin A, such as green-leaved vegetables, orange-<br>\ncolored fruits, milk, meat, liver and eggs. --Antara<\/p>",
