Blind man behind rigged games<\/p>\n
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP): A blind man with no interest in football
\nhas been identified as the mastermind behind scores of Malaysia's
\nfixed soccer games, officials said Monday.<\/p>\n
The 50-year-old man, among more than 50 underground bookies
\nand players arrested since August in a bid to clean up the sport,
\nastounded authorities with his ability to rig matches without
\nknowing how they are played.<\/p>\n
\"I am shocked the blind man is the mastermind,\" Deputy Home
\nMinister Megat Junid Megat Ayob was reported saying Monday by
\nlocal newspapers.<\/p>\n
\"Though he doesn't know anything about football, he can
\nexplain how he fixes the matches,\" Megat Junid said.<\/p>\n
Officials said it was information gleaned from the blind
\nsuspect that enabled the arrest of key players and bookies
\nresponsible for rigging matches in Malaysia's national premier
\nleague.<\/p>\n
Police said nine players and bookies, including the blind man,
\nhave been banished to their home districts under the Restricted
\nResidence Act to help with investigations.<\/p>\n
\"We will make our recommendations to the government to
\nrestrict the movements of another 16 players soon,\" federal
\ncriminal investigations director Mohamed Said Awang told
\nreporters.<\/p>\n
The Restricted Residence Act is normally applied on those
\nsuspected to be involved in activities deemed detrimental to the
\nsecurity and interest of the country but who could not be
\nprosecuted due to insufficient evidence.<\/p>\n
Megat Junid said the bookies will be banished for two years.<\/p>\n
\"We are confident they will not operate anymore as their phone
\ncalls will be screened,\" he said.<\/p>",
