The result, the power plant must depend on the availability of fuel oil from Pertamina. “This incident threatens that blackout in shifts will last longer,” said Muljo in Jakarta yesterday (23/11).

He said, even without explosions, due to the dry season, all hydroelectric power plants (PLTAs) in the Java-Bali system cannot operate. In addition, the boiler of the Paiton steam powered electric generator (PLTU) unit 8 of private ownership (600 megawatt) has been disturbed since November 7. PLTU Tanjung Jati unit 2 (600 MW) and PLTGU Cilegon is also in short supply of gas. “Until tonight (yesterday), the Java-Bali system is short of 1,030 MW electricity supply,” he said.

Pertamina’s Vice Director Iin Arifin Takhyan, said gas procurement is stopped not only for PLN, but also for the fertilizer factory of PT Petrokimia Gresik and PT PGN (State Gas Company), which channelled gas for the industrial zone in East Java. “It takes three weeks at the minimum to connect the broken pipe,” she said.

Pertamina’s spokesperson Toharso said regarding the exploded gas pipe, its diameter was 28 inches and it channels 78 million cubic feet of gas every day (MMSCFD) from the Santos field and 62 MMSCFD from the EMP Kangean’s field at Madura offshore. The gas was to be channeled to PGN for the East Java distribution area by 78 MMSCFD, Petrokimia Gresik around 50 MMSCFD and PLTGU Gresik around 12 MMSCFD.

According to PGN’s General Manager for East Java Distribution, Trijono, at least 40 industries in Surabaya, Sidoarjo, Pasuruan, Mojokerto, Gresik and Probolinggo are not producing because the gas supply is stopped. Among them are Leces Probolinggo, Samsung, Surabaya KErtas, Gresik Power, Tjiwi Kimia, Sasa Inti and Ajinomoto. “Seventy percent of their gas needs are procured by Pertamina via PGN,” he said.

Nieke Indrietta, Muhammad Fasabeni, Fery Firmansyah and Kukuh s.
