Black box findings may not be revealed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto
\nhinted yesterday that the results of the examination of the
\nflight data and voice cockpit recorder, referred to as the
\nblackbox, of the Garuda Indonesia Airbus which crashed last
\nmonth, may not be made known to the public.<\/p>\n
Haryanto told journalists that once the investigation team had
\nfinalized its findings the government would reveal them to the
\nHouse of Representatives commission responsible for
\ntransportation.<\/p>\n
"Then we'll discuss with the commission whether or not to
\npublicize the findings," the minister was quoted by Antara as
\nsaying in Semarang, Central Java.<\/p>\n
The Garuda Indonesia Airbus 300-B4 crashed on Sept. 26 killing
\nall 234 aboard.<\/p>\n
Despite an intensive search, the blackbox was only found
\nTuesday. The blackbox was found buried 20 centimeters deep.<\/p>\n
Haryanto said that although the blackbox had been found, it
\ncould take eight months to determine the cause of the accident.<\/p>\n
"The blackbox will be taken to Australia and investigated by a
\nteam led by Professor Diran. From there, the results will be
\ndiscussed," the minister said.<\/p>\n
"It's a long process and could take three months, five months,
\nsix months or even eight months," he added.<\/p>\n
The government has so far been tight-lipped about what might
\nhave caused the accident. President Soeharto has called on the
\npeople to be patient and not speculate on the matter. (mds)<\/p>",
