        "content": "<p>Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Ministry of Investment and\nDownstreaming\/Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM) considers Carbon\nCapture and Storage (CCS) to be an instrument for driving\ndecarbonisation while strengthening Indonesia\u2019s investment appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy for Investment Planning at the Ministry of Investment and\nDownstreaming\/BKPM Ichsan Zulkarnaen said CCS plays an important role in\nhelping various industrial sectors reduce their carbon footprint in\norder to remain competitive in the global market.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, CCS is strategic because it supports decarbonisation in sectors\nthat find emission reduction difficult, such as oil and gas, cement,\nfertiliser, petrochemicals, refineries, power generation, and so on,\nwhile also increasing the attractiveness of industrial investment,\u201d\nIchsan said at the International and Indonesia CCS Forum 2026 in Jakarta\non Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, the implementation of CCS provides a number of\nstrategic benefits for industry, ranging from emission reduction to\nmaintaining corporate competitiveness in the face of global carbon\npolicies.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that CCS is capable of capturing more than 90 percent of\ncarbon emissions before they are released into the atmosphere. In\naddition, this technology can also help industry anticipate potential\ncarbon costs or the implementation of carbon taxes in the future.<\/p>\n<p>He assessed that Indonesia holds a strategic position in CCS\ndevelopment because it has a large industrial base as well as abundant\ncarbon storage potential.<\/p>\n<p>Based on current estimates, Indonesia has CO2 storage potential of\nmore than 577.62 gigatonnes spread across a number of regions.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia also has carbon storage options both onshore and offshore,\nas well as a strategic position in Asian trade routes.<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that BKPM has mapped a number of potential clusters for\nCCS development based on the proximity between industrial emission\nsources and carbon storage locations.<\/p>\n<p>The four clusters include South Sumatra with potential emissions of\naround 3 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) and identified storage capacity\nof 584 million tonnes, West Java with emissions of around 13 million\ntonnes per annum and storage capacity of 612 million tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, East Java with emissions of around 9 million tonnes per\nannum and storage potential of 345 million tonnes, and Kalimantan with\nemissions of around 15 million tonnes per annum and storage potential of\n1,945 million tonnes.<\/p>",
