Bitung, Bojonegoro, Kabil to be main ports<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Transportation Haryanto Dhanutirto
\nsaid yesterday that Kabil Port on Batam Island, Bojonegara Port
\nin Banten, West Java, and Bitung Port in North Sulawesi would
\nbecome the country's main ports.<\/p>\n
Haryanto said the three locations not only had a more
\nstrategic location and deeper water than other alternatives but
\nalso better economic prospects.<\/p>\n
The three ports are to be developed to boost international
\nshipping activities and support the country's export industry, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The Batam Industrial Development Authority has earlier said
\nKabil Port would be developed by a British company, Indoport,
\nwith a capacity of up to 3.5 million 20-foot equivalent units
\n(TEUs) a year.<\/p>\n
Indoport is to invest US$900 million in the project and will
\noperate it under a 60-year build-operate-transfer (BOT) contract.<\/p>\n
Bojonegara Port is being developed by a consortium, PT Teluk
\nBanten Peti Kemas Indonesia, which consists of the state-owned
\nport operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia II (30 percent); PT Bina
\nJasa Hantarindo (25 percent), a company controlled by President
\nSoeharto's son Bambang Trihatmodjo; and Hutchison Port Holding of
\nHong Kong (45 percent).<\/p>\n
Construction of the port began last year and is scheduled to
\nbe completed by 2007. It is expected to handle up to 2.4 million
\n20-foot TEUs yearly.<\/p>\n
Teluk Banten Peti Kemas Indonesia is to run the port under a
\n30-year BOT contract.<\/p>\n
Bitung Port on Bitung Island is being developed by the state-
\nowned port operator PT Pelabuhan Indonesia IV which will invest
\nRp 80 billion ($33.2 million).<\/p>\n
Haryanto said several other large ports would be developed
\ninto secondary ports with the primary role of supporting domestic
\nsea transportation.<\/p>\n
The additional sites include Belawan Port in North Sumatra,
\nPanjang Port in Lampung, Tanjung Priok Port in Jakarta, Tanjung
\nEmas Port in Central Java, Tanjung Perak Port in West Java and
\nMakassar Port in South Sulawesi.<\/p>\n
Haryanto said the government would also develop 22 tertiary
\nports but did not elaborate.<\/p>\n
\"At present, the ports have inadequate facilities,\" he said.
