Bitcoin has climbed above the $85,000 mark, driven by shifts in US monetary policy and regulatory developments. The surge follows a Federal Reserve interest rate hike and the failure of the CLARITY Act in the US Senate, triggering significant liquidations in short positions.

Bitcoin’s movement has once again captured market attention after
breaking through $85,000, amidst changes in futures trading activity and
developments in US monetary policy and digital asset regulation. Shifts
in futures positions, rising trading volumes, and the liquidation of
short positions indicate a rapid market response to changing
sentiments.

According to CoinMarketCap data on Tuesday afternoon (22/09/2026),
Bitcoin was trading around $85,952, gaining 2.31 per cent over the last
24 hours and 11.72 per cent over the past week.

This strengthening occurred after the market navigated two
significant agendas: the Federal Reserve’s interest rate decision and
developments regarding the CLARITY Act in the US Senate.

On 16 September 2026, the Fed raised the benchmark interest rate by
25 basis points to a range of 3.75 per cent to 4.00 per cent. According
to an official Federal Reserve statement, the decision was made as
inflation remains at a high level and US economic activity continues to
expand.

A day earlier, the US Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act
legislation after a vote yielded 50 to 49, falling below the 60 votes
required. According to Reuters, Bitcoin and several other crypto assets
experienced pressure following the voting result.

Bitcoin subsequently rebounded and breached $85,000 on 21 September.
According to The Block, Bitcoin rose by more than 5 per cent within 24
hours, while crypto positions worth over $750 million underwent
liquidation, with approximately $648.3 million of that amount
originating from short positions.

Ryan Lymn, Chief Operating Officer at Bittime, stated that these
changes demonstrate how quickly market participants can respond to
macroeconomic and regulatory developments.

“Bitcoin’s movement following the Fed decision and the CLARITY Act
developments shows that the market can readjust positions in a short
period. Therefore, it is crucial to observe price changes alongside
trading volume, futures positions, and overall market sentiment,” Ryan
said on Tuesday (22/09/2026).

Changes in futures market activity were visible even before these two
agendas took place. Based on sentiment data cited by CoinNess, Bitcoin
futures open interest fell by approximately 13.5 per cent, from 321,497
BTC on 3 September to 278,151 BTC on 11 September.

This decline in open interest indicates a reduction in positions or
leverage by some market participants ahead of events with the potential
to increase volatility.

Talos data for the period of 10-16 September also showed that futures
trading volume increased by 6.3 per cent weekly to $1.07 trillion.
Conversely, Bitcoin open interest in US dollar terms fell by 1.6 per
cent to $44.4 billion.

Bitcoin liquidations increased by 15.9 per cent weekly to $398.3
million, with liquidation activity concentrated around the time of the
CLARITY Act’s voting failure.

After Bitcoin rebounded, futures activity also surged. According to
The Block, more than $648 million in short positions were liquidated as
Bitcoin breached $85,000.

Ryan noted that changes in futures market positions should be viewed
in a broader context and do not automatically indicate the direction of
Bitcoin’s next move.

“The rise in futures activity and short position liquidations can
strengthen price movements in the short term, but these conditions do
not necessarily mean a specific trend will continue. Traders must
understand that positions in the futures market can change rapidly
following volatility and market sentiment,” Ryan added.

Developments in global futures activity also provide context for
futures trading on Bittime. On Bittime Futures, BTCUSDT-PERP recorded
the highest trading activity of the week, followed by ARBUSDT-PERP,
UNIUSDT-PERP, XRPUSDT-PERP, and ETHUSDT-PERP.

The dominance of these pairs shows that futures activity is not
solely concentrated on the largest market-cap assets but also
encompasses other cryptocurrencies with significant trading
activity.

“Futures provide flexibility through long and short position options,
but the use of leverage can also amplify risks when market movements do
not align with the taken position. Therefore, traders need to understand
margin, leverage, liquidation, and risk management before using futures
products,” said Ryan.

Bittime Futures provides futures trading with long and short position
options and leverage of up to 25 times. Changes in activity and
liquidations in the futures market demonstrate the high sensitivity of
these products to volatility and shifts in market sentiment.
",
