        "content": "<p>Birds&apos; habitat in danger<\/p>\n<p>AMBON, Maluku: The forest reserve on the Halmahera island,<br>\nwhich is a well-known home to numerous species of birds, is under<br>\nthreat from unchecked logging, a local official said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Hings Abdillah Karim, chief of the provincial forestry office,<br>\nsaid the logging involves not only villagers but also businessmen<br>\nand local government officials.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;I was surprised when I visited the forest area recently to<br>\nfind such a dramatic environmental change since my previous visit<br>\na few months earlier,&quot; Karim was quoted as saying by Antara.<\/p>\n<p>He said he has received a report that a village chief has sold<br>\n10 hectares of land adjacent to the protected forest to a<br>\nTernate-based businessman.<\/p>\n<p>The entrepreneur has allegedly logged trees within the<br>\nprotected forest as well.<\/p>\n<p>Among the birds that face extinction are those known locally<br>\nas bidadari.
