Bird poaching declines in Irian<\/p>\n
SORONG, Irian Jaya: Researchers from the World Wide Fund for
\nNature (WWF) divide the famed bird of paradise, which is
\nprotected by law, into 11 species.<\/p>\n
Manokwari-based WWF researcher Duncan Nafile said four of the
\nspecies have \"antennae\" and are categorized into the king bird of
\nparadise, which are highly popular among Javanese bird lovers.<\/p>\n
Nafile identified the 11 species, by their Latin names, as
\nbeing ptilorii magnificus, cicinnurus regius, cicinius
\nmagnificus, paradiseae rubra, paradiseae minor, ptepidophora
\nalberti, paradiseae apoda, paradisae ragiana, lophorina superba,
\nseleusidis melano and cicinnurus resplubika.<\/p>\n
He said many of the species can also be found in the jungles
\nof the nearby Maluku province, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
Poaching king birds of paradise has declined in Irian Jaya
\nsince Indonesia passed a law on conservation in 1990, which
\nthreatens poachers with hefty fines and jail terms, he said.
