BIN involved in killing Munir: Team<\/p>\n

After having strong suspicions of the role of the National
\nIntelligence Agency (BIN) in the poisoning of rights activist
\nMunir, a government-sanctioned fact finding team concluded
\nearlier this week that the agency was involved, according to its
\nreport to the President.<\/p>\n
"BIN is believed to have been involved in a conspiracy to
\nmurder Munir," the team's deputy chairman Asmara Nababan stated
\non Wednesday on the sidelines of a closed-door meeting to prepare
\nthe report.<\/p>\n
The report, however, did not definitively state that BIN
\ncommitted an institutional crime, nor did it state how deeply BIN
\nindividuals were involved. In addition they did not find a clear
\nmotive behind the murder, mostly because of the agency's
\nreluctance to give the team complete access to certain relevant
\ndocuments and its arms warehouse.<\/p>\n
"We've kept the names of the suspects in our pocket, but we
\ncan't determine how far they contributed to the murder," Asmara
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
In its report set for submission to President Susilo Bambang
\nYudhoyono on Thursday, there is the suggestion for the President
\nto order the police to launch a full investigation of some BIN
\nofficials, who were in charge when Munir died last September.<\/p>\n
The team, whose mandate expires on Thursday, was formed by the
\nPresident to help the police investigate the case.<\/p>\n
A source said the role of each BIN official in the murder was
\ndescribed in the nearly 100-page report, including who played
\nwhich roles, such as the mastermind and the final executioner.<\/p>\n
Another team member, Munarman, hinted that the team would
\nrecommend police investigate former BIN chief A.M. Hendropriyono,
\nwho previously refused to respond to the team's three summonses.<\/p>\n
"I can assure (you) that one of them is a person who strongly
\nreacted to our findings and recently concluded a 'political road
\nshow' to approach the legislators," said Munarman, who also heads
\nthe Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI).<\/p>\n
Hendropriyono met with a group of House legislators -- who are
\ncurrently discussing the Munir case as well -- for a second time
\non Tuesday. The fact finding team declined an invitation to the
\nmeeting. The meeting was intended to give the team members a
\nchance to seek Hendropriyono's clarification, which had eluded
\nthem.<\/p>\n
Hendropriyono has filed a report with the police against two
\nof the team members for defamation.<\/p>\n
In its report, the team also criticizes the police for its
\npoor performance in handling the case, prompting the team to ask
\nthe President to establish a supervisory team to ensure the
\npolice seriously deal with the case.<\/p>\n
"We have learned that the police failed to raise key questions
\nduring the questioning of witnesses, including Muchdi," Asmara
\nsaid, referring to former deputy BIN chief Muchdi PR.<\/p>",
