Bill on outer space treaty endorsed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: The House of Representatives (DPR) endorsed on Monday
\na new bill on the 1967 UN Outer Space Treaty during a plenary
\nsession led by one of its deputy chairmen, Soetardjo
\nSoerjogoeritno.<\/p>\n
The agreement was reached after all of the 10 House factions
\nexpressed no objection to the substance of the bill, which will
\nnow be submitted to President Megawati Soekarnoputri for
\nenactment into law.<\/p>\n
The treaty regulates activities of countries conducting
\nexploration of and using outer space, including the moon and the
\nplanets.<\/p>\n
Minister of Foreign Affairs Hassan Wirayuda, who attended the
\nsession with State Minister for Research and Technology Hatta
\nRajasa, said the treaty served as a juridical benchmark for
\ncountries in conducting the exploration of outer space.<\/p>\n
Advances in technology had enabled a number of
\ncountries to have an opportunity of claiming a part of outer
\nspace, he said.<\/p>\n
\"The outer space treaty sets aside outer space, including
\nthe moon and the planets, for human activities. As a consequence,
\nthe use of outer space must be directed toward the fulfillment of
\ncommon interests and the achievement of peaceful goals,\" he said.
