Bill on building to be tabled soon<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Public Works Radinal Mochtar said
\nyesterday the government would introduce building laws within the
\nnext few months.<\/p>\n
The minister said a draft of the laws had been submitted to
\nthe House of Representatives for approval.<\/p>\n
The construction bill will be an important legal instrument to
\nregulate the country's growing construction business.<\/p>\n
The rapid development in the building sector has created
\nproblems, many of which could not be solved because there were no
\nspecific laws, the minister said.<\/p>\n
"The planned law will define all things related to the
\nconstruction industry; the rights, obligations and
\nresponsibilities of all people involved," the minister said in a
\nspeech at the national congress of the Indonesian Architects
\nAssociation in Bali.<\/p>\n
The minister predicted the increase in the number of people
\nliving in cities would speed up the building sector's growth.<\/p>\n
The urban population would nearly triple to 140 million within
\nthe next 20 years from 60 million in 1990, he said.<\/p>\n
The minister warned that architects had to be good enough to
\ncope with the liberalization of world trade and services.<\/p>\n
He said in the free trade era of the next 10 years only those
\nwith skills and integrity would survive.<\/p>\n
"It is therefore important for all Indonesian architects to
\nprepare themselves for entering the free competition era," he
\nsaid. "Otherwise they will only become guests in their own
