        "content": "<p>Bill Clinton named UN special envoy for tsunami relief<\/p>\n<p>Agence France-Presse<br>\nUnited Nations<\/p>\n<p>The United Nations confirmed on Tuesday it had offered former <br>\nU.S. president Bill Clinton the job of UN special envoy for <br>\ntsunami relief, and that Clinton had accepted.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Secretary General has indeed offered to former U.S. <br>\npresident Bill Clinton the position of his Special Envoy for <br>\nTsunami-affected Countries and president Clinton has accepted,\" a <br>\nspokesman for UN Secretary General Kofi Annan said in a brief <br>\nstatement.<\/p>\n<p>\"The Secretary General is confident that president Clinton <br>\nwill bring energy, dynamism and focus to the task of sustaining <br>\nworld interest in the vital recovery and reconstruction phase <br>\nfollowing the tsunami disaster that hit South Asia on Dec. 26 <br>\n2004,\" the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>\"He (Annan) believes that no one could possibly be better <br>\nqualified for this task,\" it added.<\/p>\n<p>Annan and Clinton will make a joint appearance later this <br>\nmonth to provide more details on Clinton's appointment when the <br>\nformer U.S. leader returns from a visit to the region with former <br>\nU.S. president George Bush.<\/p>\n<p>Clinton and his predecessor Bush have already been asked by <br>\ncurrent U.S. President George W. Bush to lead private U.S. <br>\nfundraising efforts for the victims of the Dec. 26 killer waves, <br>\nwhich left more than 289,000 people dead.<\/p>\n<p>Annan's spokesman, Fred Eckhard said Annan wanted to name a <br>\nspecial envoy \"to keep world attention focused on the clean up <br>\nand the reconstruction.\"<\/p>\n<p>Earlier on Tuesday, Eckhard said the United Nations also <br>\nwanted to \"capitalize on the openings that it has afforded both <br>\nIndonesia and Sri Lanka to make political advances with the rebel <br>\nmovements in those two countries.\" --AFP<\/p>",
