Organizers of erotic dances should beware! Soon they could be
\nsentenced to 10 years in jail or fined Rp 1 billion (US$120,000).<\/p>\n
A House-sponsored bill banning illegal acts of pornography
\nincludes people who organize erotic dances in public.<\/p>\n
The bill is yet to get the government's support and it will be
\nsome time before it could passed into law. The House of
\nRepresentatives is now in recess and will not convene again until
\nApril.<\/p>\n
It is not clear whether the law would classify the famous
\n\"drilling dance\" of dangdut singer Inul Daratista -- considered
\nby many to be erotic -- as pornographic.<\/p>\n
Inul's dance drew criticism from many conservative quarters
\nlast year. She ignored the criticism, which many said only won
\nher more fame and notoriety. Other dangdut singers have since
\nfollowed suit with their own racy dance moves.<\/p>\n
The bill suggests the establishment of a national
\nantipornography agency to study activities considered to be
\nerotic.<\/p>\n
The agency will have at least nine members consisting of
\nrepresentatives from religious groups, sociologists,
\ncriminologists, and experts in sports as well as art and culture.<\/p>\n
The bill defines acts of pornography as actions intended to
\nshow and\/or to exploit sexual, indecent, and\/or erotic
\nactivities.<\/p>\n
By restricting or censoring pornography it aimed to protect
\npeople from exploitation and promote morality and ethics.<\/p>\n
The bill restricts anyone from showing their genitals,
\nbuttocks, or breasts in public places. It also bans anyone from
\nappearing naked or kissing on the mouth in public.<\/p>\n
It bans masturbation, lewd gestures and sex in public places.<\/p>\n
Performing in, organizing or watching sex shows or parties
\nwould become crimes under the bill. Providing funds or facilities
\nfor shows or parties would also be criminalized.<\/p>\n
The bill caused an uproar when its draft was first shown to
\nthe public late last year.<\/p>\n
Despite the restrictions, there are conditions that could
\nexempt some event organizers from charges of pornography.
\nEroticism in educational, artistic, sport or cultural activities
\nwould not be deemed illegal. But these activities would only be
\nallowed to be held in art galleries or sport stadiums.<\/p>\n
Under the bill the public could notify the authorities about
\nacts they deemed pornographic and whistle-blowers would be given
\nprotection by the courts.<\/p>\n
