        "content": "<p>Bilingual books advantageous for locals<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): As the English language is increasingly emerging<br>\nas a second language in Indonesia, and there are now many<br>\ninternational schools operating in the country, there is likely<br>\nto be a growing demand on bilingual literature.<\/p>\n<p>Such literature will help Indonesians learn English as well as<br>\nassisting foreigners improve their Indonesian.<\/p>\n<p>\"Although we are an English-speaking school, we do have<br>\nstudents studying Bahasa Indonesia for whom the books are of<br>\ngreat value,\" said Paige Summers of North Jakarta International<br>\nSchool.<\/p>\n<p>The Balai Pustaka publishing house has brought out 17<br>\nbilingual book titles, all of them folk tales from different<br>\nregions of Indonesia, mainly Java.<\/p>\n<p>\"Some of the books still need some revision to suit the<br>\nEnglish language abilities of elementary students,\" Elvis<br>\nIskandar from the marketing department at Balai Pustaka<br>\nexplained.<\/p>\n<p>\"By promoting books that the children can relate to, we<br>\nbelieve that English can be introduced in elementary schools more<br>\neasily,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>One of the latest books is Si Bungsu Katak (The Youngest Frog)<br>\nby Murti Bunanta, founder of Kelompok Pecinta Bacaan Anak (the<br>\nSociety for the Advancement of Children's Literature). The book<br>\nreceived the honorary award from the Janusz Korczak International<br>\nLiterature Prize for promoting \"literary values of the folk story<br>\nwhich teaches us to accept and understand the 'odd and small',\"<br>\naccording to the award itself.<\/p>\n<p>Balai Pustaka is planning to continue publishing bilingual<br>\nbooks even though the sales are slow. Since June 1998 the company<br>\nhas sold less than 1,000 books, mainly to schools and libraries.<\/p>\n<p>PT Grasindo, which has launched a series of eight books<br>\nwritten by Pavan Kapoor, sold a little bit more than this over<br>\nthe past year.<\/p>\n<p>\"The product still needs some time to get going, so we are<br>\nworking on new marketing strategies,\" Subagya, head of the<br>\ncompany's marketing division, said.<\/p>\n<p>More publishing companies are planning to follow suit. PT Elex<br>\nMedia Komputindo, for example, is planning to introduce a 15-<br>\ntitle series of bilingual folk tale books to the market. (Lena<br>\nRosenthal)<\/p>",
