        "content": "<p>Bid for Spore telecom<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AFP): Three consortiums comprising Singaporean and<br>\nforeign partners have submitted tenders to operate full<br>\ntelecommunication services in Singapore from April 2000, industry<br>\nregulators said over the weekend.<\/p>\n<p>The Telecommunication Authority of Singapore (TAS), which had<br>\nset a May 31 deadline for tenders, said it will now carry out a<br>\npre-qualification exercise to weed out unsuitable bidders and<br>\nproduce a shortlist.<\/p>\n<p>The TAS earlier said it would license up to two new players to<br>\ncompete in basic services against giant Singapore<br>\nTelecommunications Ltd. (SingTel).<\/p>\n<p>The first bidding consortium, called TelcomOne, includes<br>\nSingapore's Keppel Telecoms Pte. Ltd. and publisher Singapore<br>\nPress Holdings Ltd., partnered with Britain's Cable and Wireless<br>\nPte. and Hong Kong Telecom Ltd.<\/p>\n<p>The TelcomOne partners are behind MobileOne (Asia) Pte. Ltd.<br>\nor M1, a cellular phone and pager operator which has enjoyed<br>\nstrong sales since its launch on April 1, when competition in<br>\nmobile communications began here.<\/p>",
