BIC plans to expands Batam industrial estate<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Batamindo Industrial Corporation (BIC) will
\nexpand its Batam island industrial park by 30 hectares to meet an
\nexpected foreign investment increase, a BIC executive said
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
John Sulistiawan, the industrial estate developer's manager,
\nsaid the 30-hectare industrial estate, now being built, was
\nscheduled to open in the middle of next year.<\/p>\n
The demand for investment sites on the island, the country's
\nlargest industrial bonded zone, would continue to increase in
\nline with increased foreign investments in Indonesia, he said.<\/p>\n
The Batamindo industrial estates hosts 87 foreign companies
\nand another 100 multinationals are expected in the next two
\nyears, he said.<\/p>\n
PT Batamindo Investment Corporation, a joint venture between
\nIndonesia's Salim Group and two Singapore companies, has the
\nisland's largest industrial park. It is about 500 hectares.<\/p>\n
John said Batamindo's investment in industrial facilities and
\ninfrastructure like roads, water treatment and telecommunication
\nfacilities would increase to about S$800 million (US$615 million)
\nin 1998 from about S$425 now million because of the expansion.<\/p>\n
\"For example, the industrial estate, has a 100-megawatt power
\nplant,\" he said. Batamindo, which recently received ISO
\ncertification, provides workers' dormitories on the estate.<\/p>\n
About 55,000 workers, mostly women, work on the estate and
\nnearly half stay in the dormitories, he said.<\/p>\n
Most workers come from Java and nearby islands on two to
