Bibliography on Indonesia published<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The United States Library of Congress released a
\ntwo-volume bibliography of English-language resources on
\nIndonesia last week.<\/p>\n
Unveiling Indonesia - Indonesian Holdings in the Library of
\nCongress: A Bibliography was compiled by A. Kohar Rony, a
\nnaturalized U.S. citizen of Indonesian origin who is one of the
\nlibrary's Southeast Asian specialists.<\/p>\n
It took Rony seven years to complete the bibliography, two
\nsets of which he presented to the Indonesian Ambassador to
\nWashington Arifin M. Siregar last Thursday in Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n
The bibliography contains nearly 17,000 entries and three
\nindexes - by name, subject and title. It is divided into 30
\nsubject areas, including geography, ethnic groups, media,
\nlibraries, history, demography, social and legal systems,
\nreligion and popular beliefs, language and government.<\/p>\n
The formats covered in the work range from reference works to
\naudio-visual materials, according to a press release from the
\nIndonesian embassy in Washington.<\/p>\n
\"This project is a small contribution to my native country,\"
\nRony said when presenting the bibliography.<\/p>\n
The Library of Congress' collection on Indonesia includes much
\npre-World War II material. The majority of the collection dates
\nfrom 1964, when the library established a field office in Jakarta
\nand started its special acquisition program.<\/p>\n
A. Kohar Rony was born in Palembang, South Sumatra, in 1933,
\nwent to the U.S. in 1954 to study and ended up staying. He
\nobtained his masters in Southeast Asian studies from Yale
\nUniversity and masters in library science from Catholic
\nUniversity in Washington. He started working for the Library of
\nCongress in 1962 and reached his present position in 1969. (swe)<\/p>",
