The signature of Bank Indonesia Governor Burhanuddin Abdullah
\nis not only good for making a banknote legitimate, it also
\napparently convinced bankers to hand over a lot of cash to so-
\ncalled fund-raisers.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Police are looking for three women who requested
\ndonations from several banks in Jakarta using proposals
\nsupposedly signed by Burhanuddin.<\/p>\n
\"A BI executive reported to us late Thursday about the use of
\nBurhanuddin's forged signature to collect money,\" spokesman Sr.
\nComr. Tjiptono said on Friday.<\/p>\n
He said money was collected in the guise of raising money for
\nIndonesia Prays, a charity program to help earthquake and tsunami
\nvictims in Aceh and North Sumatra, including Nias.<\/p>\n
The March 28 earthquake that rocked Nias killed hundreds of
\npeople.<\/p>\n
The three women submitted proposals for donations to Bank
\nCentral Asia on April 8.<\/p>\n
BCA then telephoned the central bank and asked for
\nconfirmation on the program, delaying making any contribution.<\/p>\n
Burhanuddin said he never signed a proposal for Aceh or Nias
\nand ordered subordinate Laode Marhaenis to report the matter to
\nthe police.<\/p>\n
Tjiptono said the police had identified the three women from
\nwitnesses' descriptions and were looking for them.<\/p>\n
\"We're looking into the forgery case ... We believe others are
\nbehind the crime and recruited the women,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He added that although no other banks had reported similar
\ncases, the police were convinced that other banks had fallen
\nvictim to the scheme and they were trying to determine how much
\nmoney had been collected.<\/p>\n
Tjiptono called on people to always check the validity of the
\nsignature of prominent officials or high-ranking government
\nofficials on charity proposals as many turn out to be fake.<\/p>\n
\"We have learned by experience that many proposal asking for
\nmoney for natural disasters are often misused. They use the money
\nfor themselves. So, be cautious, and always check whether the
\nofficials really signed the proposal or the project really
\nexists,\" he said.<\/p>",
