BGN: 512 Students Hit by Suspected MBG Food Poisoning in East\nJava<\/p>\n

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesia\u2019s National Nutrition Agency (BGN) said\n512 people were affected by suspected food poisoning linked to the Free\nNutritious Meals (MBG) program served by the Talang Angin Nutrition\nFulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) in Kalitengah, Sidoarjo, East Java. Of\nthose, 80 people remain hospitalized.<\/p>\n
BGN Deputy for Monitoring and Oversight Ketut Sumedana said 312 of\nthe 512 affected people had been discharged after recovering, while\nanother 120 remain under observation.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf the total 512 people exposed or affected, around 80 are still\nreceiving treatment, while 312 have been discharged from hospitals after\nbeing declared recovered. Meanwhile, 120 others are still under\nobservation,\u201d Ketut said in an official statement on Wednesday,\nSeptember 2, 2026.<\/p>\n
BGN Investigates Cause of Food Poisoning<\/p>\n
Ketut said BGN has been in close communication with local government\nofficials and the management of Mamba\u2019ul Hikam Islamic boarding school,\nas well as Mamba\u2019ul Hikam Madrasah Aliyah (MA) and Madrasah Tsanawiyah\n(MTs).<\/p>\n
BGN is also conducting an investigation with the Sidoarjo Health\nAgency to determine what caused the suspected food poisoning. Ketut said\nthe findings would be announced once the investigation is complete.<\/p>\n
As a follow-up measure, BGN imposed a 30-day suspension on the Talang\nAngin SPPG, classifying it as a serious sanction.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have also imposed a serious 30-day suspension on the Talang Angin\nSPPG in Kalitengah, Sidoarjo,\u201d Ketut said.<\/p>\n
BGN has also proposed removing the head of the Talang Angin SPPG and\nreplacing the management with a new team.<\/p>\n
Health of Victims Prioritized<\/p>\n
Ketut said BGN is currently prioritizing the treatment and recovery\nof victims who remain hospitalized.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor now, our focus is on ensuring the safety and health of our\nchildren who are being treated at several hospitals. This is our\npriority,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Earlier, Talang Angin SPPG head Rafli Ridho apologized for the\nincident. He said the food had been prepared according to the usual\nprocess.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe started cooking at midnight and delivered the food at 11 a.m. It\nwas still within the safe limit because it was consumed within four\nhours of delivery,\u201d Rafli said.<\/p>\n
He also said the meals had undergone checks before being served,\nincluding tasting by representatives from the school and Islamic\nboarding school.<\/p>\n
The students and boarding school residents ate the MBG meals at\naround noon on Tuesday, September 1. They reportedly began experiencing\nsymptoms including nausea, vomiting and diarrhea at around 6 p.m.<\/p>\n
