Firms unhappy with bill on dumping<\/p>\n
TANGERANG: A draft bylaw that will set out a scale of fees
\npayable for dumping industrial waste in Tangerang regency has met
\nwith objections from members of the industrial community.<\/p>\n
\"If endorsed, the bill will be a burden because such payments
\nwill mean an increase in production costs,\" Herry Rumawatine,
\nchairman of the Tangerang chapter of the Indonesian Business
\nAssociation (Apindo), said Thursday.<\/p>\n
The Tangerang environmental agency had completed a draft of
\nthe bylaw, which aims at controlling the disposal of industrial
\nwaste.<\/p>\n
The amount payable will be determined by the extent to which
\nthe waste has been processed before being dumped as well as its
\nvolume, meaning that the cleaner the waste, the lower the
\npayment.<\/p>\n
Separately, head of the environmental agency Deden Sugandhi
\nsaid businesspeople were exaggerating their concerns.<\/p>\n
\"If their waste is safe (for the environment), they won't have
\nhigh fees to pay, will they? After all, we simply want to protect
\nthe environment.\"<\/p>\n
Tangerang regency, which is located to the west of Jakarta, is
\nhome to many factories and industrial firms that are large
\ncontributors to the administration's revenue. -- JP<\/p>",
