Beware of potential for riots: Soesilo<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The government believes that despite the passing
\nof the general election and the recent absence of riots there is
\nstill great potential for unrest.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs and Security
\nSoesilo Soedarman urged all community groups yesterday to beware
\nof this potential which could plunge the country into more
\nunrest.<\/p>\n
But at yesterday's press conference after a monthly limited
\nmeeting of the ministries under his coordination, Soesilo refused
\nto say what he meant by potential.<\/p>\n
\"In principle, there is still much potential (for unrest) but
\nI don't want to elaborate. I am just talking about something
\nstrategic, people will understand when I remind them of the
\npotential, and they will be on guard,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Yesterday's meeting was attended by Minister of Home Affairs
\nMoch. Yogie S.M., Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Alatas,
\nMinister of Defense and Security Edi Sudradjat, Minister of
\nJustice Oetojo Oesman, Minister of Information R. Hartono,
\nMinister of Manpower Abdul Latief and Attorney General Singgih.<\/p>\n
Armed Forces Chief Gen. Feisal Tanjung did not attend the
\nmeeting, but was represented by State Intelligence chief Maj.
\nGen. Moetojib and Armed Forces Intelligence chief Maj. Gen. Farid
\nZainudin.<\/p>\n
Soesilo said the meeting had concluded that the country's
\npolitics and security were \"safe and under control\".<\/p>\n
\"The meeting calls on all of society to maintain this orderly
\nand calm condition to help secure next year's People's
\nConsultative Assembly's general session to elect a president,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Soesilo said the ministers deplored the violence and
\nviolations which marred the May 29 general election, although the
\nvoter turnout rate had exceeded 90 percent.<\/p>\n
\"The general election proceeded in a direct, public, free, and
\nconfidential manner. All election contestants (parties) have
\nsigned the final results... as for the violations, that are still
\nleft (to be handled), the government will investigate them,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Soesilo said the meeting had thanked the Armed Forces for
\n\"patiently and procedurally\" safeguarding the election so it was
\nsuccessful.<\/p>\n
Soesilo reiterated yesterday the government's call for the
\npublic to continue the National Discipline Drive which his office
\ninitiated two years ago.<\/p>\n
\"Now is the time to re-discipline ourselves... we've urged
\ngovernment officials to boost the drive by providing better
\npublic service,\" Soesilo said.<\/p>\n
Asked if the discipline drive would include fighting
\nwidespread corruption and collusion, Soesilo said: \"It's needless
\nto say.<\/p>\n
\"The three poll contestants promised during campaigning to
\nfight corruption and collusion. The only thing to do now is start
\nin the name of Allah,\" he said. (aan)<\/p>",
