Beware of negative information<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Information Harmoko warned yesterday
\nof an influx of \"negative information\" that is being beamed in by
\nforeign broadcasting networks, especially to rural areas.<\/p>\n
Briefing the press yesterday at the conclusion of his two-week
\nRamadhan tour, which covered 6,300 kilometers of Kalimantan,
\nHarmoko pointed out that information has become \"one of the basic
\nneeds\" of the population.<\/p>\n
\"Parabola antennae sit atop of so many houses along the roads
\nand rivers, both in urban and rural areas,\" he said. \"What we
\nneed to do is strengthen the people's mental and cultural
\nresilience, so that they won't be affected by the flow of
\nnegative information that is not in accordance with our culture.\"<\/p>\n
He called for an all-out effort to establish \"rural
\ninformation orders\", or information centers and facilities to
\nboost public resilience to \"negative information\".<\/p>\n
\"Through the establishment of a rural information order, we'll
\nhave rural resilience which, in turn, will support national
\nresilience,\" Harmoko said.<\/p>\n
Harmoko makes the Safari Ramadhan tour annually in his
\ncapacity both as information minister and as chairman of the
\nruling political grouping Golkar. The state-television station
\nTVRI reports on his activities extensively every evening and
\nviewers are usually able to watch his activities in various
\ncities, handing out Golkar membership cards to supporters.<\/p>\n
Harmoko told reporters yesterday that in his opinion, his trip
\nhas had a \"positive impact on various development efforts, both
\nat the regional and national levels\".<\/p>\n
The trip, he said, \"continuously promoted the people's welfare
