The Indonesian Paediatric Society (IDAI) has issued a strong warning to parents planning to travel with children during the 2026 Eid exodus, highlighting Indonesia's position as the world's second-highest in measles outbreaks. IDAI urges completing basic immunisations, particularly the Measles-Rubella (MR) or Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccines, and adopting hygiene practices to mitigate risks of transmission in crowded public transport. This advisory underscores the ongoing public health challenge, with 572 confirmed cases reported in early 2026, emphasising the importance of vaccination to prevent severe complications like encephalitis and pneumonia in unvaccinated children.

The Indonesian Paediatric Society (IDAI) has issued a stern warning
to parents planning to take children on the 2026 Eid journey home. The
Chair of the IDAI Central Board, Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, emphasised
that extra vigilance is required given Indonesia’s ranking as the
world’s second highest in Extraordinary Events (KLB) of measles.

“Due to the ongoing measles KLB situation in Indonesia, which still
holds the second place globally, this requires special attention from
all of us,” Piprim stated firmly in his official remarks in Jakarta on
Thursday (19/3/2026).

IDAI urges parents to ensure children’s basic immunisation is
complete, especially the Measles-Rubella (MR) or Measles, Mumps, Rubella
(MMR) vaccine, before departure. In addition to the measles threat, the
risk of transmitting coughs and colds in crowded public transport poses
a real danger to children’s health.

Piprim asked parents to teach children to maintain distance from
individuals showing symptoms of cough or cold. The use of masks in
public spaces and public transport is still recommended as an additional
layer of protection.

“Teach children the etiquette of coughing and sneezing by covering
the mouth with tissue or the elbow. Also avoid sharing personal items
such as eating utensils, towels, or drinking bottles,” he added.

IDAI suggests that Eid travellers avoid overly crowded tourist spots
exposed to extreme weather. Instead of crowded places, parents are
encouraged to choose more controlled educational destinations such as
museums, science centres, or children’s libraries.

In addition to physical health, children’s psychological comfort
during the journey also needs attention. Parents are advised to prepare
a playlist of music, storybooks, or audio fairy tales to keep children
from getting bored during the trip.

“Always monitor weather developments and avoid disaster-prone areas
such as floods or landslides for the safety of your loved ones,” Piprim
concluded.

Measles cases in Indonesia surged in early 2026 with 572 confirmed
cases. Be wary of the risks of encephalitis and pneumonia in
unvaccinated children.
",
