Tuberculosis remains a significant public health challenge in Indonesia, with early detection crucial to preventing transmission. Key symptoms include a persistent cough lasting more than two weeks and unexplained weight loss, which are often overlooked as common ailments. The government provides free screening and treatment, emphasising the importance of completing the full course of medication to prevent drug-resistant strains.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the significant public health
challenges in Indonesia. This infectious disease, caused by the
bacterium Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily attacks the lungs but
can also spread to other parts of the body. Awareness of the early
symptoms is key to breaking the chain of transmission and ensuring
patient recovery. Many people often ignore the mild symptoms that
appear, dismissing them as a common cough or fatigue from daily
activities. In fact, a delay in diagnosis can worsen the patient’s
health condition and increase the risk of transmission to family and the
surrounding environment. One of the most common indicators of pulmonary
TB infection is a cough that does not go away. If you experience a
productive cough lasting two weeks or more, this should be considered a
potential early symptom of TB. Unlike a cough from a common cold or flu,
which usually subsides within days, a TB cough tends to be persistent
and its intensity may increase. In more severe cases, the cough may be
accompanied by blood spots (haemoptysis), indicating damage to the lung
tissue. Besides coughing, drastic weight loss is a systemic symptom
often found in TB patients. The bacteria consume the body’s energy
reserves and cause chronic inflammation that reduces appetite. If you
experience significant weight loss in a short period without being on a
diet or changing your eating patterns, you should seek a health
examination immediately. This weight loss is often accompanied by a
feeling of weakness and easy fatigue (malaise). The Indonesian
government, through the Ministry of Health, has provided free TB
screening and treatment services at community health centres
(Puskesmas). The main diagnostic method currently used is the Rapid
Molecular Test (TCM), which can detect the presence of TB bacteria and
drug resistance with high accuracy in a short time. TB treatment is
carried out by administering Anti-Tuberculosis Drugs (OAT), which must
be taken regularly without interruption. Adherence to medication is
crucial to prevent Drug-Resistant TB (TB-RO), which is far more
difficult and takes longer to cure. A doctor specialising in children at
Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo National Central General Hospital explained the
early symptoms of TB, ranging from a persistent cough for two weeks to
weight loss.
",
