The head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN) of the Republic of\nIndonesia, Commissioner General Suyudi Ario Seto, has stated that\nnarcotics in liquid form are part of an evolving pattern of drug-related\ncrime that requires vigilance.<\/p>\n
\u201cLiquid-form narcotics have emerged, many of which have been\nuncovered by BNN together with other law enforcement agencies over the\npast few months,\u201d said Suyudi in a statement confirmed in Jakarta on\nTuesday (15 September).<\/p>\n
Suyudi said that over the past two months, BNN had uncovered nearly\neight tonnes of narcotics through four major cases. One of these cases,\nhe said, involved the discovery of around 3.37 tonnes of cannabis flower\nbuds originating from Thailand, which were planned to be exported to\nEurope and then extracted into liquid narcotics.<\/p>\n
In addition, BNN has uncovered several cases of etomidate and crystal\nmethamphetamine smuggling in liquid form, demonstrating the increasingly\ndiverse forms of narcotics and the methods used by syndicate networks to\nsmuggle and distribute them in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\u201cCertainly, the point of entry is showing an increasing trend among\nour children, through electronic cigarettes or vapes. They appear to be\nusing ordinary e-cigarettes, when in fact they contain liquid narcotics\nwhich are then consumed through the device,\u201d said Suyudi.<\/p>\n
He explained that BNN\u2019s recommendation for a total ban on electronic\ncigarettes was based on laboratory tests conducted on 1,745 vape samples\nat the BNN laboratory. Of that number, 1,716 samples were found to\ncontain new types of narcotics, or New Psychoactive Substances\n(NPS).<\/p>\n
According to Suyudi, discussions with specialists in cardiology,\npulmonology, and internal medicine also showed that the chemical content\nof e-cigarettes poses a risk of serious health problems, particularly if\nthe devices are laced with narcotics.<\/p>\n
The constantly evolving nature of drug-related crime is one of the\nreasons BNN is pushing for a ban on e-cigarette use in the workplace.\nThis appeal was conveyed, among others, to PT Garuda Indonesia (Persero)\nTbk during a socialisation event on the development of narcotics\ncirculation in Indonesia for Garuda Indonesia employees in Tangerang,\nBanten, on Wednesday (9 September).<\/p>\n
In response to the appeal, Garuda Indonesia\u2019s President Director,\nGlenny Kairupan, affirmed the company\u2019s commitment to maintaining a safe\nand healthy work environment that is free from narcotics abuse.<\/p>\n
As the national flag carrier bearing responsibility for aviation\nsafety and security, Garuda Indonesia has ensured there is no room for\nnarcotics abuse within the company.<\/p>\n
Glenny expressed hope that collaboration with BNN would strengthen\nthe vigilance of all personnel against the threat of narcotics, so that\nevery Garuda Indonesia employee can carry out their duties\nprofessionally, particularly in safeguarding flight safety.<\/p>\n
At the end of the socialisation event, Garuda Indonesia employees\nunderwent urine tests as an early detection measure for narcotics abuse,\nwhile also reinforcing a shared commitment to realising a drug-free\nworking environment.
