Beware foreign values!<\/p>\n

We are at present confronted with some disheartening
\nphenomena. Firstly, the ever declining spirit of nationalism as a
\nresult of the intrusion of foreign values, i.e., individualism,
\nconsumerism, materialism and capitalism.<\/p>\n
Secondly, the gap between economic development in the regions
\nand that in the towns is widening; so is the gap between rich and
\npoor as the result of an economic system that does not benefit
\nthe people at large, who long for justice and prosperity.<\/p>\n
Thirdly, the process of marginalization of potential lucrative
\nsectors, such as agriculture and maritime resources, the growing
\npoverty in rural areas and the lack of commitment to uplifting
\nthe intellectual capacity of the people.<\/p>\n
As a nation, we cannot remain introverted. But, on the other
\nhand, to adopt all foreign values into our society to the
\ndetriment of the values of our forefathers would be a big
\nmistake.<\/p>\n
