Beware: Foreign NGOs

The Papuan issue is Indonesia's domestic affair and the nation
\nwill solve it on its own. Foreign non-governmental organizations
\nonly create confusion instead of helping local people, and the
\ngovernment should watch out for their activities in the country.<\/p>\n
An analysis by the International Crisis Group (ICG) that I
\nread in mid-April 2003 contains propaganda to discredit Indonesia
\nin the world scene, particularly regarding the policy on Papua's
\nexpansion. Indirectly, ICG is assisting groups opposed to the
\ngovernment's policy, while it understands little about the
\nhistory of Papua.<\/p>\n
The ICG article has thus provoked Papuans into conflict, while
\nsowing the seeds of enmity between indigenous people and
\nresettlers. The government should act wisely and strictly against
\nsuch provocation, if necessary by banning the group from
\noperating in Indonesia.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the government needs to implement the policy
\npromptly and meaningfully, so that ordinary people in Papua can
\nsoon enjoy the benefit of this program.<\/p>\n
