        "content": "<p>Betawi Forum demands native governor<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA: The newly established Betawi (native Jakartan)<br>\norganization threatened on Sunday to send hordes of its<br>\nsupporters onto the streets if the next governor was not a<br>\nBetawi.<\/p>\n<p>\"Whoever the governor is, they should be a Betawi. If not, we<br>\nwill deploy 100,000 people onto the streets,\" said chairman of<br>\nthe Betawi Community Brotherhood Forum Iwan Setiawan, as quoted<br>\nby Detikcom news online.<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta's gubernatorial election will be on Sept. 17 with<br>\nseveral Betawi candidates, including the current City Secretary,<br>\nFauzi Bowo, and Deputy Governor for Social Welfare Affairs<br>\nDjailani.<\/p>\n<p>However, City Governor Sutiyoso, who is not a Betawi, is<br>\ncurrently considered the strongest candidate because he has<br>\nreceived support from the largest party, the Indonesian<br>\nDemocratic Party of Struggle (PDI Perjuangan), and other parties<br>\nin the City Council.<\/p>\n<p>Since the country's independence, the governor of Jakarta has<br>\nalways been a member of the military, there has never been a<br>\nBetawi.<\/p>\n<p>Sutiyoso was former Jakarta Military Commander during the last<br>\nyears of former authoritarian president Soeharto. --JP<\/p>",
