Berlin impresses Governor Sutiyoso<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): What's Governor Sutiyoso done so far on his two-
\nweek official trip to Turkey, Rotterdam and Berlin?<\/p>\n
According to Antara, while in Berlin, the governor was stunned
\nby the rapid but well-integrated development of the city which --
\nin his opinion -- does not need to scare the landscape by
\ndemolishing any historical structures.<\/p>\n
\"The combination of the buildings of the past and modern
\nstructures with the splendid support of the underground and on-
\nthe-ground transportation system could become a powerful magnet,
\nmaking Berlin a center for economic and cultural interests in the
\nyear 2000,\" he told a lunch hosted by Berlin Governor Eberhard
\nDiepgen on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
The other \"precious experiences\" during his visit to Berlin
\nincluded being introduced to the city's transportation network,
\nwater reserves, nature conservation and the process of recycling
\nindustrial and household waste, the governor said.<\/p>\n
\"I really hope that the breakthrough recorded by the City of
\nBerlin in various sectors can be learned by Jakarta,\" Sutiyoso
\ntold the gathering at the city's Gastehaus Senat in Berlin.<\/p>\n
In his welcome speech, Governor Diepgen told his guests from
\nJakarta that the involvement of local residents was the most
\nimportant element in the concept of Berlin's development.<\/p>\n
Diepgen also stated that Berlin would be ready at any time to
\nhelp Jakarta develop a subway.<\/p>\n
\"I want to stress here that we're ready to give a hand for the
\nrealization of the project,\" the Berlin governor said, without
\nfurther explanation.<\/p>\n
As reported earlier, Sutiyoso -- who often calls Jakartans \"my
\npeople\" and considers himself their \"leader\" -- was on his Oct.
\n19 to Oct. 30 trip with former head of the city's bureau for
\nintercity and regional cooperation, Robert P. Silalahi, and one
\nof the governor's adjutants.<\/p>\n
His itinerary while in European cities has not been disclosed,
\nalthough he will sign a letter of intent on trade, tourism, and
\nart and culture in Istanbul and pay a courtesy call on Rotterdam
\nMayor H.J. Simons.<\/p>\n
It is also unclear whether he was successful in attracting
\nforeign investors to do businesses in Jakarta, which has been
\nbadly hit by the economic crisis, as expected by councilors.<\/p>\n
The trip is aimed mainly at strengthening the sister-city
\ncooperation program with Jakarta.<\/p>\n
He went to Berlin at the invitation of his counterpart,
\nDiepgen.<\/p>\n
Prior to attending the lunch, Sutiyoso was honored by the
\nBerlin authorities to sign and write down his impression of the
\nGoldene Buch (Golden Book) of Berlin.<\/p>\n
In his words, Sutiyoso expressed a strong wish that the
\nsister-city program of Berlin and Jakarta, an agreement on which
\nwas signed on April 13, 1994, could be further strengthened and
\n\"closer\" in the future.<\/p>\n
During his meeting with Berlin's senator for internal affairs,
\nJorg Schonbohm, Sutiyoso was told that the German government had
\nagreed to train two senior police officers from Indonesia on
\ncrime investigation.<\/p>\n
Sutiyoso said that he was advised by National Police chief Lt.
\nGen. Roesmanhadi to ask the German authorities for information
