        "content": "<p>\u201cThe Berau district government encourages the cultivation of kemiri\nsunan (Reutealis trisperma) as a solution for rehabilitating critical\npost-mining lands, providing ecological benefits while simultaneously\nboosting the economy,\u201d Deputy Head of Berau District Gamalis said in\nBerau on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that post-mining rehabilitation is not merely an obligation\nbut a vital long-term investment, offering significant benefits for\nenvironmental balance, public health, and economic development.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLand rehabilitation is not just about reforestation. It is an effort\nto create productive areas capable of improving the community\u2019s economy\nin the future,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Studies have shown that candlenut can thrive on marginal and degraded\nlands. The plant also features a strong taproot system that helps\nprevent erosion and landslides.<\/p>\n<p>Its canopy helps reduce surface temperatures, while fallen leaves\naccelerate the accumulation of organic matter to aid in restoring soil\nfertility.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to restoring environmental conditions, Reutealis\ntrisperma yields about 52 percent vegetable oil for biodiesel processing\nand boasts a productive lifespan of 50 to 100 years.<\/p>\n<p>During a meeting on Tuesday with the Seychelles President\u2019s Special\nEnvoy for ASEAN, Nico Barito, and representatives of several mining\ncompanies, Gamalis expressed optimism that developing candlenut\nplantations would support renewable energy security and reduce\ndependence on fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe appreciate the support of the Seychelles President\u2019s Special\nEnvoy for ASEAN in introducing the cultivation of kemiri sunan.\nHopefully, this collaboration will serve as an initial step in\nstrengthening the green economy by actively involving mining companies,\u201d\nhe said.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, Barito highlighted that Reutealis trisperma is a highly\nadaptive plantation crop suitable for former coal mine sites.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe success of development is measured not only by the resources\nutilized but also by efforts to restore nature.
