Bengkulu's airport awaits new name<\/p>\n
BENGKULU: The name of Indonesia's initial first lady,
\nFatmawati Soekarno, looks set to be the new name for Padang
\nKemiling Airport in Bengkulu.<\/p>\n
Governor Adjis Ahmad was quoted by Antara as saying that based
\non the reaction from the local community, many favor Fatmawati as
\nthe new name for the airport.<\/p>\n
Fatmawati was wife of Indonesia's first president Sukarno. She
\nalso sewed the red-and-white flag which was flown during the
\nproclamation of independence in Jakarta on Aug. 17, 1945.<\/p>\n
But any hopes that the airport will soon be renamed may be
\ndashed as the provincial legislature decided yesterday to suspend
\nthe process of renaming the airport pending a decision from the
\ncentral government.<\/p>\n
To date, the names pushed forward for selection are: Fatmawati
\nSoekarno, Prof. Dr. Hazairin SH and Ir. Indra Tjahya. All were
\nBengkulu-born figures whose contributions to the nation are noted
\nin history books.<\/p>\n
However, provincial House speaker Achmad Rofei expressed hope
\nthat a decision could be reached soon, enabling preparations to
\nbe made for the airport to be officially renamed during the
\nprovince's 30th anniversary celebration on Nov. 18.<\/p>",
