Bengkulu short 900 teachers<\/p>\n
BENGKULU, Bengkulu: Elementary and madrasah (Islamic) schools
\nhere are short 900 teachers, prompting physical education
\nteachers to teach other subjects, the local education and culture
\nchief said yesterday.<\/p>\n
H. Idrus Mauma told Antara that the students' learning process
\nhas not been disrupted because the skills of existing teaching
\nstaffs were applied as best as possible.<\/p>\n
However, he said, \"We would like the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture to help us ... by promoting new teachers and transferring
\nexisting teachers.\"<\/p>\n
Idrus said problems affecting schools included unsuitable
\nschool buildings and inadequate desks and chairs to match the
\nnumber of students.<\/p>\n
There are 10,972 teachers in Bengkulu, most of whom are in
\nelementary schools maintaining a teaching staff of less than
\nnine, a number that falls below the Ministry of Education and
\nCulture's requirement for schools.<\/p>\n
The ministry stipulates elementary schools require a teacher
\nfor each grade, a teacher for each subject taught in the school
\nand a teacher-student ratio of one to 40.<\/p>\n
Bengkulu's elementary schools and private Islamic schools
\nMadrasah Ibtidaiyah Swasta number 1,358 and 67 respectively, with
\na total number of 211,172 students. (01)<\/p>",
