Bengawan Solo badly polluted<\/p>\n
SEMARANG: Industrial waste dumped into Bengawan Solo river is
\nposing health problem for the hundreds of thousands of people who
\nuse the river water for daily purposes in Central and East Java.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Central Java provincial government's
\nenvironmental bureau Mulyanto said yesterday that scores of
\nfactories dump their waste into the river without proper
\ntreatment.<\/p>\n
\"Hundreds of thousands of people use the river water for their
\ndaily needs such as irrigation and drinking. They are directly
\naffected by the contamination,\" he said in a workshop.<\/p>\n
According to Maryanto, only 44 factories along the river have
\nwaste water treatment facilities and only a few use them
\nproperly,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Most other factories have yet to build waste water treatment
\nplants. They consider the facilities just too expensive, he
