Benefits of a peaceful separation<\/p>\n
Recent discussions about autonomy or independence for East
\nTimor have largely ignored the enormous economic benefits that
\ncould result from this kind of change, if it occurs peacefully.<\/p>\n
An autonomous or independent East Timor would be a magnet for
\ntourists who are drawn to unique, exotic cultures. Goa and Macao,
\nthe other former Portuguese colonies in Asia, derive a large
\npercentage of their incomes from tourism.<\/p>\n
An international airport in Dili would make nearby Indonesian
\nislands, like Alor and Wetar, more accessible, and tourists who
\nappreciate Timorese culture might also visit West Timor, Flores,
\nand other islands.<\/p>\n
Some Indonesians have expressed apprehensions that East Timor
\nmight set an example for other areas to follow. However, if the
\nexample is of peace and prosperity, separatist violence would
\nlikely decrease.<\/p>\n
Some adjustments would be necessary, of course. Democratically
\nelected provincial governments might want greater control over
\nnatural resources and immigration, but these issues could be
\nresolved easily, as all provinces would be represented in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Most important of all, a peaceful transition in East Timor
\nwould demonstrate to the world that Indonesians are, at heart,
\ngenerous, hospitable people who welcome visitors from all over
\nthe world to their beautiful tropical islands.<\/p>\n
