Goa and Macao,
the other former Portuguese colonies in Asia, derive a large
percentage of their incomes from tourism.

An international airport in Dili would make nearby Indonesian
islands, like Alor and Wetar, more accessible, and tourists who
appreciate Timorese culture might also visit West Timor, Flores,
and other islands.

Some Indonesians have expressed apprehensions that East Timor
might set an example for other areas to follow. However, if the
example is of peace and prosperity, separatist violence would
likely decrease.

Some adjustments would be necessary, of course. Democratically
elected provincial governments might want greater control over
natural resources and immigration, but these issues could be
resolved easily, as all provinces would be represented in
Jakarta.

Most important of all, a peaceful transition in East Timor
would demonstrate to the world that Indonesians are, at heart,
generous, hospitable people who welcome visitors from all over
the world to their beautiful tropical islands.

CHRISTY LANZL

Jakarta
",
