Belo describes Clinton meeting<\/p>\n
DILI: Dili Bishop Carlos Filipe Ximenes Belo said Sunday that
\nhe had met U.S. President Bill Clinton at the White House last
\nweek in his capacity as a 1996 Nobel Peace Prize winner not as a
\npolitician.<\/p>\n
\"The meeting with President Clinton was part of my series of
\nvisits to Europe and America in my capacity as a winner of the
\n1996 Nobel Peace Prize,\" Belo said.<\/p>\n
He said he had toured Europe and America for almost two months
\nfrom early May until the end of June.<\/p>\n
Belo told Antara that President Clinton had expressed his
\nrespect and support for the efforts he had made with those who
\nloved peace and justice in East Timor and other parts of
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
\"We met with mutual understanding particularly on issues
\nrelated to East Timor's reconciliation and held constructive
\ntalks based on familial spirit,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said that after meeting Clinton he had talked to U.S.
\nNational Security Advisor Samuel Berger, the assistant to the
\nU.S. Secretary of State and several US senators.<\/p>\n
\"With the US senators, we discussed the problem of mines
\ninjuring humans. We always talked within the framework of world
\npeace and justice,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Officials in Jakarta have questioned Belo's motives for
\nmeeting the American politicians.<\/p>\n
Coordinating Minister for Political Affairs and Security
\nSoesilo Soedarman said Saturday that he was considering summoning
