Bekasi's drainage system<\/p>\n

In the past, floods caused by heavy rains only inundated the
\nBTN housing complex in Bekasi, a dormitory town 20 kilometers
\neast of Jakarta. Now floods also invade other housing complexes.<\/p>\n
In housing complexes with a relatively low location, flood
\nwaters can reach a height of more than a half meter. Apparently
\nBekasi's regional administration issued building permits without
\nconsidering a drainage system.<\/p>\n
The burgeoning of new housing complexes in Bekasi has
\ngradually reduced water catchments so that rainwater which used
\nto be absorbed by the land now stays on the surface.<\/p>\n
An example of a non-functioning drainage system runs alongside
\nJl. Jatiluhur in the direction of the Perumnas state housing
\ncomplex. The width of the drain has gradually diminished and now
\nthe water ceases to flow before it reaches the big river that it
\nis supposed to flow into.<\/p>\n
Another consequence of bad drainage is the stagnant water
\nwhere mosquitoes can breed, sometimes dengue fever carrying
\nmosquitoes.<\/p>\n
If there is no improvement in Bekasi's drainage system, the
\nnumber of houses menaced by floods will increase. Who is actually
\nresponsible for this situation? The Regional Administration of
\nBekasi or the Ministry of Public Works?<\/p>\n
