Bekasi official dismissed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Bekasi Mayor H. Nonon Sonthanie dismissed
\na Bojong Rawa Lumbu subdistrict official on Thursday for
\ndeliberately hindering the processing of local resident's
\nidentification cards.<\/p>\n
The mayoralty spokesman Cecep Sutandi said yesterday that the
\ndismissal was intended mainly to demonstrate to the public that
\nthe mayoralty administration was determined to improve the
\nservices it provides.<\/p>\n
\"The mayor has been directly monitoring activities at district
\nand subdistrict offices to check that corrupt practices were not
\nhindering the issue of identification cards ,\" Cecep was quoted
\nby Antara as having said.<\/p>\n
The decision to fire the official, identified only as AS, was
\ntaken following a report from Bekasi Timur district head Heri
\nLukman Tohari that AS had deliberately withheld data necessary to
\nprocess the cards.<\/p>\n
\"Civil servants are here to serve the public, not be served,\"
\nthe mayor said.<\/p>\n
The dismissal of AS, who was a contract worker and not a
\npermanent government employee, is a stern warning to other
\ngovernment officials not to violate their responsibilities in
