Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto is exploring a Chinese model of circular economy to transform the Bantargebang landfill, following a working visit to observe waste-to-energy projects. The administration is pursuing cooperation with China's Mizuda Group to build a waste-to-energy facility, which is expected to spur derivative industries and create economic benefits for local communities. The plan also includes collaboration on creative industries and aims to rebrand Bantargebang as a centre for green innovation and economic growth within the next decade.

Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto conveyed the plan during his working visit
to China to observe waste-to-energy projects (PSEL).

“We aim to learn how a company can develop from the textile industry
into a business group with operations in the environmental sector,”
Adhianto said when contacted on Tuesday, July 30.

According to him, an example of innovation-based industry development
in China can be learned from a textile manufacturer, Mizuda Group.

The group later developed Wangneng Environment, which has become one
of China’s major waste-to-energy companies.

The company is expected to build a PSEL facility in Bantargebang in
the near future.

Adhianto said the innovation can create new business sectors that
remain related to a company’s core business.

He added the visit also provides important references for preparing
Bantargebang’s transformation. The presence of the PSEL facility is
expected to mark the beginning of growth in various interconnected
circular-economy-based industries that can bring economic benefits to
local communities.

The Bekasi administration is also exploring cooperation between
Mizuda Group and the Bekasi Regional National Crafts Council
(Dekranasda) to strengthen the creative industry, particularly fashion.
The potential cooperation covers capacity building for young designers,
improvement of MSME product quality, knowledge exchange, and access to
international markets.

Bekasi, says Adhianto, has many creative talents who need support to
compete in the global market. “We want the collaboration to become a
learning platform for designers and MSME players, while opening
opportunities for Bekasi fashion products to gain international
competitiveness,” he added.

He also invited Mizuda to invest in Bekasi as a location for
industrial development.

“Our vision is to transform this area into a center of environmental
innovation and a green economy zone,” he said, adding his hope that the
investment will be present derived from waste processing facility, and
industries that create jobs, enable technology transfer, and drive the
local economy.

The Bantargebang transformation, says Adhianto, must be carried out
comprehensively. The PSEL facility will serve as the foundation, which
will then be strengthened by derivative industries such as the
utilization of fly ash and bottom ash (FABA), new investment, an
innovation center, as well as creative and manufacturing sectors that
support the circular economy.

“I hope in the next five to ten years, when people hear the name of
Bantargebang, they no longer think of piles of waste, but an area that
has successfully transformed into a center of environmental innovation,
a green economic growth hub, and a place where new opportunities are
created for the people of Bekasi,” Adhianto said.

Related news: Indonesia accelerates waste-to-energy projects in 30
locations

Related news: Indonesia, Denmark explore cooperation in green job
creation

Translator: Bayu Prasetyo
",
