The Bekasi City Government in West Java has urged all residents to\nhelp resolve the waste problem as additional support for the\nconstruction of the Waste-to-Energy (PSEL) facility in Ciketing Udik,\nBantargebang District.<\/p>\n
Bekasi Mayor Tri Adhianto Tjahyono stated that the PSEL facility,\ninaugurated today with a target to operate within the next 18 months and\na waste processing capacity of 1,500 tonnes per day, is not yet\nsufficient to resolve the community\u2019s waste production problem.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe presence of PSEL is one of the important steps in addressing the\nwaste problem in Bekasi City. However, this capacity is not yet fully\nable to solve the waste problem generated every day. There is still\naround 300 tonnes of waste that we must resolve together,\u201d he said in\nBekasi on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
According to him, resolving the waste problem cannot rely solely on\nthe construction of the PSEL facility. The community must also be\ninvolved through the habit of sorting waste at the source, especially\nfrom their own homes.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs conveyed by the Coordinating Minister for Food, this does not\nmean the waste problem is solved. It still needs to be supported by\nsorting from our own homes. If we start sorting from our respective\nresidences, it will certainly reduce the problem of 300 tonnes of waste\nevery day,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Tri emphasised that efforts to resolve the waste problem must be\ncarried out collectively and not only at the household level. Waste\nsorting also needs to be implemented in schools, shopping centres,\noffices, trading areas and among traders.<\/p>\n
West Java Governor Dedi Mulyadi also expressed hope that waste\ndevelopment and management in the Greater Bekasi, Greater Bogor and\nGreater Bandung areas can become a momentum to increase public\nawareness. The waste problem is considered to require not only\ntechnology but also behavioural change so that people no longer\nlitter.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan said that\nthe development of large-scale PSEL technology is one of the\ngovernment\u2019s important instruments in addressing the accumulation of\nurban waste that has exceeded capacity.<\/p>\n
The government is targeting the acceleration of PSEL construction in\n40 major cities experiencing waste emergency conditions to be completed\nby 2027 to 2028. \u201cThose that are in emergency and large-scale, above\n1,000 tonnes, we will build PSEL or Waste to Energy,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Zulkifli also targets the national waste problem to be addressed by\n70-80 percent by 2029. Meanwhile, around 20 percent of other problems\nare at the household level and require education and changes in\ncommunity habits.<\/p>\n
Therefore, waste sorting at the source is an important part of the\ngovernment\u2019s strategy.
