        "content": "<p>Bekasi asked to close pig farms<\/p>\n<p>BEKASI: The Bekasi administration has been asked to close all<br>\npig-breeding farms in its territory because local residents have<br>\nobjected to their existence.<\/p>\n<p>\"The government should do this to avoid violent protests from<br>\nthe locals who have been demanding that pig farms should not be<br>\nallowed in residential areas,\" Abid Marzuki, who claimed to be an<br>\nenvironmentalist told Antara on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that the Bekasi administration should be able to<br>\ndifferentiate between a business that is compliant with Islamic<br>\nlaw (syariah) and that which is not.<\/p>\n<p>\"This is particularly important because most of Bekasi<br>\nresidents are Muslims and the Muslim holy month of Ramadhan is<br>\napproaching,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>The pig-breeding farms, which also function as slaughter<br>\nhouses, are located in the subdistricts of Kedungringin, Tambun,<br>\nJatimulya and Muara Gembong. Collectively they sell and slaughter<br>\nover 2,000 pigs every day.<\/p>\n<p>Local residents have protested about the farms, saying that<br>\nthe stench they emit is foul and that they have tarnished the<br>\nimage of the Muslims residing in the area. --JP<\/p>",
