Bekasi allocates Rp 18b for schools<\/p>\n
BEKASI: The Bekasi regency administration has allocated Rp 18
\nbillion from its 2002 budget for the renovation of damaged school
\nbuildings and the construction of new schools.<\/p>\n
The work will begin in July, said Syamsudin, a member of the
\nregency council's Commission E for education.<\/p>\n
But Syamsudin, a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle (PDI Perjuangan), warned on Friday that strict controls
\nwere necessary to prevent the money from being siphoned off and
\nto ensure the quality of the construction work.<\/p>\n
He also called for transparency in the project tender, to
\navoid any corruption, collusion or nepotism.<\/p>\n
His remarks apparently were made in response to reports about
\nrampant corruption in government projects.<\/p>\n
There are 705 state elementary schools, 34 state junior high
\nschools, nine state high schools and two state vocational high
\nschools in the regency, according to data from the local
\neducation office. Most of these schools are in poor
