        "content": "<p>Beijing and Pyongyang toast their friendly relations<\/p>\n<p>BEIJING (AP): China and North Korea toasted their longtime<br>\nalliance with parties marking the 36th anniversary of a treaty<br>\nbetween the socialist neighbors, official reports said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>Since the collapse of the Soviet Union, China has been North<br>\nKorea's principal ally, providing shipments of weapons, food and<br>\nfuel to its increasingly impoverished and isolated neighbor.<\/p>\n<p>Chinese Ambassador Wang Yongxiang threw a party in the North<br>\nKorean capital, Pyongyang, Friday to mark the anniversary of the<br>\nTreaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance, the<br>\nNorth Korean news agency KCNA reported.<\/p>\n<p>Song Pong Hwan, acting charge d'affaires for the North Korean<br>\nEmbassy in Beijing, hosted a similar banquet Friday attended by<br>\nsenior Chinese officials, China's state-run Xinhua News Agency<br>\nreported.<\/p>\n<p>China places great importance on friendship with North Korea,<br>\nBuhe, vice chairman of China's legislature, the National People's<br>\nCongress, was quoted as saying.<\/p>\n<p>In an indication that the North commands a less significant<br>\nstatus in Beijing's eyes than in the past, however, the very top<br>\nechelon of Chinese leadership did not attend Song's party.<\/p>\n<p>Beijing has in recent years strengthened its economic and<br>\ndiplomatic ties with rival South Korea, hoping to draw more trade<br>\nand investment. However, it has sought to retain its influence<br>\nwith the North.<\/p>\n<p>China fought on the side of the Communist North during its<br>\n1950-1953 war with the capitalist South.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to their longtime treaty, China and North Korea<br>\nsigned an agreement for military aid in May 1996, the Japanese<br>\nnews agency Kyodo News Service reported yesterday, citing China<br>\nForeign Policy 1997, a book recently published by the Chinese<br>\nForeign Ministry.<\/p>\n<p>Kyodo cited a brief reference to an agreement signed May 21,<br>\n1996, that obliges Beijing to provide economic and military aid<br>\nto North Korea. The agreement had not previously been reported.<\/p>\n<p>Their offices closed for the weekend, Foreign Ministry<br>\nofficials were not available for comment on the report.<\/p>",
