JAKARTA \u2014 PT Kereta Commuter Indonesia (KCI) is currently considering\nvarious measures to reduce the subsidy burden on electric commuter rail\n(KRL) fares without placing additional strain on passengers.<\/p>\n
KCI Chief Executive Mochamad Purnomosidi stated that the plan for\nfare increases is still under thorough examination.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe intention is to see how we can reduce subsidies. We feel for the\ngovernment, really. So we\u2019re exploring various solutions, including\npriority trains,\u201d Purnomo said at KCI Hall, Juanda, Central Jakarta, on\nMonday (9 March 2026).<\/p>\n
Nevertheless, decisions on fare increases will not be made hastily\nbecause they require approval from the Ministry of Transport.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe cannot decide this ourselves. The approval must come from the\nministry because these are subsidised trains,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
In addition to raising fares, KCI is also considering operating\npriority KRL services as an alternative way to reduce subsidies.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are still examining it. But there is clearly an intention to\nreduce subsidies, one of which would be through priority trains,\u201d said\nPurnomo.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo it would only stop at busy locations. That is the plan we are\nworking on. The intention is to reduce subsidies,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
Although priority KRL and fare increases are the main options being\nconsidered, Purnomo emphasised that KCI is still open to other solutions\nfor reducing the subsidy burden.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt could be that priority trains don\u2019t go ahead, but we raise fares\non economy KRL instead.
