Caregivers, particularly those without medical training, face substantial psychological strain as they support patients with varied needs and endure long, demanding shifts. A senior clinical psychologist, Ratih Ibrahim, notes that high professional expectations and the need for certified, patient, and competent personnel contribute to stress, with emotional burnout common even among experienced caregivers.

Jakarta — KOMPAS.com reports that behind the caregiver’s friendly
smile and their ready, attentive manner in accompanying patients lie
stories rarely seen. Being a caregiver, particularly for those who are
non-medical, is not merely a physical or administrative job. The
profession demands mental preparedness, patience, and the ability to
adapt to the needs and conditions of patients, which often vary. For
many caregivers, psychological pressure arises as a consequence of the
responsibilities inherent to the profession. Senior Clinical
Psychologist and Director of Personal Growth, Ratih Ibrahim, reveals
that the high demands of the profession are a source of stress for
caregivers. She argues they must have sufficient knowledge, be
certified, responsive, agile, and competent in carrying out their
duties. Because, she says, each patient has specific needs that must be
met, ranging from patience in dealing with the patient’s character, to
meticulousness in meeting medical needs, and ensuring the patient’s
well-being. “The patients under their care also have specific needs that
must be met within the caregiver’s capacity, such as being diligent,
patient, and careful, which also place pressure on the caregiver,” Ratih
said when contacted on Tuesday 3 March 2026. In addition, Ratih noted
that long hours, monotonous routines, and having to work alone often
create an emotional burden. “Even more so if the caregiver has personal
life stories, such as family problems,” she added. According to Ratih,
high work intensity can lead to stress and emotional exhaustion.
Meanwhile, caregivers must constantly be on standby, adapt to changes in
the patient’s mood, and face demands that are not always easy. Even for
those with experience, maintaining mental balance remains a
challenge.
",
