Beggars in the city<\/p>\n

I am deeply concerned and saddened to see what has become a
\ncommon sight at intersections in Jakarta: street vendors,
\nbuskers, homeless children and an increasing number of beggars
\nasking for money from passengers in buses and cars. There are
\nalso beggars with leprosy. These people should be receiving care
\nat a proper health facility.<\/p>\n
I am fully aware that this may be a result from the protracted
\nmonetary crisis. Unemployment is rife due to mass layoffs and the
\nnumber of socially disadvantaged has soared, forcing them to beg
\non the streets.<\/p>\n
Now that the holy fasting month of Ramadhan is upon us, we
\nwill see more and more beggars on the streets because they think
\nthis is the time when Muslims give alms to the poor.<\/p>\n
Why isn't the Ministry of Social Affairs doing something to
\nhelp with these social problems? Isn't the state responsible for
\nthese unfortunate people? Why is the ministry letting them roam
\nthe streets?<\/p>\n
Not only is their presence a real eyesore, but the situation
\ncan provide real criminals with an opportunity to commit crimes
\nby pretending to be beggars.<\/p>\n
I think it is high time for the ministry to do something to
\novercome the many complex social problems of this nation.<\/p>\n
