Beggars flourish in Banjarmasin<\/p>\n
BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: Beggars and female and child
\nstreet singers are becoming more numerous at intersections in
\nBanjarmasin.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday Antara reported that this scene was easily found
\nat main road intersections and shopping centers.<\/p>\n
The report said beggars included minors who would \"hang on car
\nwindows\" in their efforts to ask for cash.<\/p>\n
The head of the women's study center at the state-run Antasari
\nBanjarmasin Islamic Studies College (IAIN), Masyitah Umar,
\nconfirmed exploitation of children was increasing.<\/p>\n
\"Before the crisis these beggars were not visible on main
\nroads such as Jl. A. Yani and Jl. Gatot Subroto,\" she said in a
\ndiscussion here. In the talks on empowering people in the crisis
\nMasyitah highlighted the impact of the crisis on housewives.<\/p>\n
Confused at how to provide basic needs, many had resorted to
\nbegging and exploiting children, she said.<\/p>",
