Beeper numbers changed<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): State domestic telecommunications firm PT Telkom
\nchanged yesterday three-digit telephone numbers of Skytel, Starko
\nand Santika radio paging (beeper) operators.<\/p>\n
Telkom announced Skytel phone numbers had changed from 131 to
\n13011, Starko numbers from 135 to 13022 and Santika numbers from
\n138 to 13038.<\/p>\n
The change was necessary because of a government regulation
\nstating three-digit phone numbers were designated for public
\nservices only.<\/p>\n
Telkom previously set three-digit phone numbers but the
\ngovernment took over the right to set the numbers last year. Now
\nonly the Directorate General of Post and Telecommunications can
\nset three-digit numbers.<\/p>\n
Three-digit telephone numbers are now being applied to
\nimportant services like emergency units, police stations, the
\nfire brigade and other major social facilities.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta police station's number is 110, AIDS information
\n163 and the fire brigade 113.<\/p>\n
Existing three-digit phone numbers include 108, 106, 102
\n(telephone information), 100 (long distance call operator), 104
\n(international call operator) and 103 (local time). (icn)<\/p>",
