Beauty queens and values<\/p>\n
It is to be hoped the beauty queen debate will end now that
\nPresident Soeharto has barred participation in any form of
\nIndonesians in such competitions abroad.<\/p>\n
It may be true that aside from displaying their bodies,
\nparticipants must also display their intellectual qualities, but
\nthe element that determines the winner is still the body, which
\nis displayed openly.<\/p>\n
In Indonesian culture the display of a woman's body, even
\npartially clothed, is considered improper. Moreover, it is
\nregarded as denigrating to women. It is therefore most proper for
\nPresident Soeharto -- as quoted by Minister of Women's Affairs
\nMien Sugandhi -- to bar the sending of Indonesian participants to
\ninternational contests of this kind.<\/p>\n
It would also be proper, for the time being, to put an end to
\nsuch contests in this country until those who are considered most
\ncompetent to speak about the matter -- women's organizations,
\nexperts and the House of Representatives -- have made known their
\nstance.<\/p>\n
